Necessity is the mother of invention – Plato

Turner D. Century Bicycle Company was born out of necessity. After living in Phoenix and commuting 1-hour to graduate school every day, I (Adam) desired something different.  Although I am a  true “car guy," I didn’t want to diminish my love of being behind the wheel by being forced to drive every day. I wanted my time behind the wheel to be more of something I chose to do and less of something I had to do.  I didn’t want to “have to drive” to the grocery store, or “have to drive” to the playground or “have to drive” to my neighbors to pick up a yard tool or a cooler.  However, unless I was able to carry my groceries home in my hand, or carry my children to the playground, or roll the cooler home from the neighbors, I was forced to drive my car or get a ride from someone.

The “Box Bike”—a three-wheel bike with a cargo box in front also known as a Christiania Bike (brand name)—was invented in Denmark.

However all that changed when I traveled to Denmark.  There I  witnessed many different ways to transport objects from location A to location B without using a car and Turner D. Century Bicycle Company was born.

The Box Bike

Most bikes produced in the world are utility bikes. They are the most common type of bike and the most popular. They are easy to ride and very effective for a wide array of tasks. Turner Trikes can be used to commute short distances to work, can be used to enjoy evening rides around the block, and can even be used for shopping and running errands. At times it can be much easier to get somewhere fast riding a bicycle than it is to walk, run, or drive making a Cargo bike a cost effective efficient option.

In some larger cities, people use cargo bicycles as their primary mode of transportation. In Copenhagen Denmark, Cargo bikes are a routine presence. According to an estimate by Copenhagenize Design Co., an urban planning consultancy specializing in bicycle culture, 28% of families with two children own one (there are approx. 40,000 cargo bikes in Copenhagen Denmark).
